0930   Doors open. Participants will be shown to their seats on a first-come-first-served basis. Any coaches or minibuses bringing participants will be registered, advised about suitable car-parks and given a time to return. Note there is no parking immediately outside the Royal Institution.

1059    Doors to the main theatre are closed. Late arrivals will be directed to any spare seats in the Gallery. In short, please do not be late.

1100    Welcome to the Royal Institution from their Young People’s Senior Programme Co-ordinator, Olympia Brown.

1110    Description of the event and public safety announcements by Rotarian, Professor Bill Mullarkey.

1115    Dr Steven Rossington of the School of Environment & Life Sciences at the University of Salford, a research chemist with no obvious fear of the finger-depleting properties of liquid nitrogen or the explosive nature of various organic chemicals, delivers a practical lecture entitled, “Chemistry with a Bang – from Past to Present”. It is guaranteed to frighten the parents of anyone considering reading chemistry at university!

1230    Lunch break. Time is precious so participants are advised to bring a packed lunch for this break, which they can eat in the Library. Please note that food and drink must  NOT be consumed elsewhere.

1315    The Theatre reopens and everyone should return to the seats they had previously occupied.

1330    Once everyone is settled, Professor Tim Cable, Director of the School of Sports & Exercise Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University, begins his session with an explanation of the way that modern scientists carry out research. It will describe, for those who have not yet been directly involved, the particular issues that impact sports performance which have been the subject of the investigation in this project and which also influence the health of the individual.

1445    A comfort break. Participants may choose to bring a soft drink with them, which they may consume in the Library.

1505    Those who have left the theatre should return to the seats they had previously occupied.

1515    An examination and analysis of the data which schools have produced throughout the project with their own observations. A detailed analysis of the data collected by participants will be undertaken and an attempt will be made to correlate this information with the state of the science as it is currently known. The Excitement of Science team will draw a whole range of conclusions from these valuable data.  

1545    Question and answer open forum.

1600    Concluding comments and closing remarks, including details of next year’s event.

1615    Participants await notification of the arrival of their transport before leaving the theatre.
