What shall we do with your measurements?

There has been a good opportunity to learn about some of the measures of fitness which are commonly used in practice. Measures such as Body Mass Index, Resting Heart Rate and VO2 Max score are things that we can easily measure ourselves. If you have been carrying out some regular physical exercise, you would expect your fitness to improve and for you to be able to identify that fact from those fitness measures.

You should be able to identify whether there is any relationship which could be observed between, for example, Resting Heart Rate and VO2 Max score, or between Body Mass Index and VO2 Max score. So, if you were to plot every individual's VO2 Max score (x-axis) against Resting Heart Rate (y-axis) as a data point on a scatter diagram, you might be able to draw a straight line which represented the best fit to the data and therefore show a relationship between the two measures. Likewise, we could repeat the exercise but this time using VO2 Max score (x-axis) against Body Mass Index (y-axis) to see if there is a relationship there as well. The types of graphs might look like the examples shown below.

We would like you to record your data and plot similar graphs to those shown above. Download a spreadsheet template to help you do this by clicking the Excel icon below, or right clicking and 'Save target as...' to save directly to your PC.

Now for a bit of fun, we'd like you to have a go at our quiz, which will collect all your responses and which will help to provide useful data for the Grand Finale at the Royal Institution in June.
