Body Mass Index (BMI)

What is your Body Mass Index?

Well, a person's BMI is a simple measure to indicate whether they have a safe weight for their height. It's calculated by taking your weight in kilogrammes (kg) and dividing it by the square of your height in metres (m2). Therefore, if you carefully record those two measurements, making sure that you have first removed your shoes and any heavy items of clothing such as a coat, you should easily be able to work out your BMI. A person with a normal weight for their height will have a BMI figure of between 20 - 25. If your BMI is below 20, you are considered to be a little underweight and if your BMI is over 25, you are heading towards being slightly too heavy for the size of your body frame.

The NHS website has a useful tool to work out the body mass index of adults or children. Click here to use this feature to calculate your BMI. Record your results and then return to this page.
